1. With personal projects like this. Usually I just jump into blocking making up the figure as I go along. I prefer setting the mood first. Securing the selling point.
2. At this point, satisfied with the selling point and blocking I start to color. To keep true to my established values. I apply cool color first then warm color. General coloring at firstpass. Going down the hierarchy of shading. 
3. At this point its all about pushing and pulling. A lot like carving, using warm color to pull the forground and cool color to push the background.
4. Push and Pull continues.
